Growing up on a lake in Michigan, I spent a lot of time outdoors near the water. Throughout my life I have traveled to and lived in many locations near beautiful bodies of water including Michigan, California, Seattle, London, New York City, and Chicago. My collection Adrift is inspired by my love of sailing and living near water. My design process included studying different kinds of sails including batwing sails and junk ships, and abstractly draping these shapes in recycled sail cloth.
As a graphic design minor, I developed digitally printed fabrics that showcase the beauty of bodies of water. Summer 2013 I traveled to familiar water locations in Michigan and Seattle and took many pictures and collected artifacts. Selected photographs from my journey have been digitally printed on cotton silk. This material has been combined with recycled sail cloth from my family’s sail boats. The pieces in my collection feature boat necklines, low backs, lines seen in sails, flat felled seams, and billowing silhouettes that catch wind as they move down the runway. My collection epitomizes the adventurous spirit of sailing off to new sights.
